Candle Care

Can We Talk about Candles and The Art to Burning a Candle?

Candle Burning Safety Tips

Your candle safety and enjoyment is extremely important to us. Even though burning a candle seems like a fairly straight forward process we like to share as much information possible to ensure your safety and a great candle burning experience. Let’s be honest, warning labels don’t necessarily explain “why” specific precautions are needed to stay safe and since we love talking about candles, we put these tips together just for you.

Always keep wicks trimmed to 1/8” - 1/4”

This keeps the flame small which helps prevent soot and makes the candle burn longer. A rule of thumb to remember is a SMALL FLAME = SLOW BURN. A slow burn means a longer lasting candle!
The bigger the flame, the faster it burns and consumes the candle. Your candles will burn up to 25% longer by trimming the wick every couple of hours and be soot free.
Want to know a secret? Trim off most of the black part of the wick. Tilt candle when lighting if you trim too short. Viola!

Keep wicks centered & re-center after extinguishing

A large melt pool can cause a wick to lean and get too close to the side of glass. This can cause overheating and possible breakage. If not repositioned it can burn unevenly. After extinguishing move wick back to center for safety and a proper burn next time you light it.

Never Leave Candle Burning Unattended

Light candles in the rooms you will be in the most. The kitchen, home office or living room, as you walk in and out of those rooms frequently. Don’t leave a candle burning in your master bathroom when you will be in the kitchen or family room.
An unattended candle is a candle burning that is not maintained or periodically checked. This is a dangerous way to burn a candle. Wherever you burn your candles always use good candle burning practices.

Keep burning candles away from children and pets.

This seems relatively simple, but children and pets might be intrigued by the flickering flame, so keep candles out of reach. Curious cats and wagging dog tails can get burned or knock a candle off the counter.

Keep burning candles away from drafts or ceiling fans.

Drafts will cause flames to flicker and flickering flames cause a disturbance in the combustion, which result in soot and uneven burning. A nice even steady flame, ideally about 1/2” in height is perfect.

Keep burning candles away from anything flammable.
Fabric, paper, mail, bedding, carpet, furniture or silk plants which could all catch fire.
